Primary Food is that which satisfies us and sustains us without the need for actual food.

According to The Institute for Integrative Nutrition, Primary Food is “play, fun, touch, romance, intimacy, love, achievement, success, art, music, self-expression, leadership, excitement, adventure, and spirituality.”

When we are fed by and fulfilled by any or all of these things, we have less of a need for Secondary Food – the kind we use to “fill” ourselves up when we are not getting enough primary food in our lives.

It’s no wonder the obesity rate and disease rates are rising! We are stuffing ourselves with food instead of what our bodies are really craving, which is joy, love, meaningful relationships with others, and a purposeful life.

One thing’s for sure, if you aren’t getting what you need “primarily” in your life, then there is no amount of food in the world that will satisfy you.

The idea of primary versus secondary food and weight gain is taught at The Institute for Integrative Nutrition as a part of their health coach certification program.

Now may be the time to take  a look at your life and decided to make some changes.

Of course, these things aren’t the be all end all to weight gain or loss, but it’s certainly a place to start taking inventory.

Obviously, you need to examine your fitness and nutrition plan closely as well if you are gaining weight.

It also wouldn’t hurt to get a check up with your doctor to make sure your hormones and thryoid are functioning properly.
